Celebrating the Heartbeat of Healthcare: A Tribute to Nurses

Posted by Erica Bettencourt

Fri, May 02, 2025 @ 11:41 AM

As the calendar turns towards May, a special week shines a spotlight on the very heart and soul of healthcare: our Nurses. National Nurses Week, celebrated each year from May 6th to May 12th, is not merely a marked period on the healthcare calendar; it is a precious opportunity to pause, reflect, and deeply cherish the unwavering dedication, boundless compassion, and exceptional skills Nurses bring into our lives every single day.

Think about it. In moments of vulnerability, fear, and uncertainty, it is often a Nurse who stands by our side. They are the calm in the storm, the knowledgeable guide through complex medical journeys, and the comforting presence offering solace and hope. From the first breath of a newborn to the peaceful passing of a loved one, Nurses are there, providing not just medical care, but a profound level of human connection.

Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern Nursing, famously said, "Nursing is an art; and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation, as any painter's or sculptor's work." This quote, though spoken centuries ago, still resonates deeply today. Nursing is far more than a job; it's a calling that demands immense knowledge, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and a steadfast commitment to the well-being of others.

Consider these facts:

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes Nurses as making the largest contribution to health globally.
  • For the 23rd consecutive year, Nurses have been named the most trusted profession in America, according to a Gallup poll released in 2025.
  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 6% growth in employment for Registered Nurses from 2023 to 2033, which is faster than the average for all occupations.

Beyond the vital medical tasks they perform, administering medications, monitoring vital signs, educating patients and families, Nurses offer something immeasurable: empathy. They see beyond the diagnosis, recognizing the individual human being behind the illness. They listen to fears, answer countless questions with patience, and offer a reassuring touch when it's needed most.

As Val Saintsbury aptly stated, "Nurses dispense comfort, compassion, and caring without even a prescription." This simple yet powerful statement encapsulates the essence of Nursing. It's about the human connection, the ability to provide holistic care that addresses not just the physical needs but also the emotional and psychological well-being of their patients.

National Nurses Week serves as a vital reminder for all of us, patients, families, healthcare administrators, and the wider community, to acknowledge and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of Nurses. It's a time to say thank you for the long hours, the emotional toll, the sacrifices made, and the unwavering commitment to providing the best possible care.

This year, let's take a moment to truly appreciate the Nurses in our lives. Let's recognize their expertise, their empathy, and their tireless dedication. They are the backbone of our healthcare system, the compassionate caregivers who make a profound difference in the lives of countless individuals every day. Let us honor them, not just this week, but always. They are, without a doubt, the heartbeat of healthcare.

Rebecca Moses, the fashion designer and artist painted 46 portraits of Mount Sinai's Nurses and named the exhibition “Thank You, Mount Sinai Nurses.”.

The large-scale portraits can be seen at Mount Sinai’s Guggenheim Pavilion on upper Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

2020 is designated the Year of the Nurse and Midwife by the World Health Organization in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale.

“To have all of our Nurses traumatized in the Year of The Nurse and not do anything about it, it was literally keeping me up at night,” Linda Valentino, the Vice President and Chief Nursing officer at Mount Sinai Health System said.

Rebecca Moses, mostly known for her fantastical and fashionable drawings teamed up with Ms. Valentino and Linda Levy, the President of the Fragrance Foundation and came up with the idea for the art project.

The designer would paint the Nurses' portraits and donate the original artworks to the hospital to be featured in an exhibition. Each Nurse would also receive a print. Linda Levy would donate 5,000 fragrance and beauty products, all filed under self-care, to those whose job is to care for others.

After labor and delivery Nurse, Vanessa Joseph saw her portrait she said she was “blown away that someone paid attention to me and wanted to paint me. I’m just a Nurse.”

Joseph said, “Sometimes you feel like you’re in the trenches. We put on the full P.P.E. and no one can even recognize you anymore. I’m just trying to guess what Rebecca saw, and it’s so much life and vibrancy. It gives people hope that we’re going to get back to that again.”

Only women were chosen for this project, it's nothing personal against men. Moses simply stated “I don’t draw men. It’s not my strength. I love men, but I don’t draw them well.”

This is a thoughtful and remarkable collaboration to honor the Nurses at Mount Sinai. Nurses all over the world are going through an extremely challenging time. We applaud all efforts in recognizing the invaluable service, professionalism, and kindness all Nurses give every day. Thank you!

Thankful For Nurses

thanks-1

We love our Nurses and with Thanksgiving being celebrated next week, it is only appropriate that we give thanks to all you awesome Nurses!

I’ve spent some time as a patient, parent, and decision-maker of a gravely ill parent, in doctor’s offices, ER’s, OR’s, ICU’s, school nurse offices, nursing homes, etc. Every time, I’ve been amazed at the professionalism, understanding and compassion of the Nurses I’ve encountered over the years, both personally and professionally. I appreciate how hard you work and how much you give of yourself. You’ve seen it all. It is not a job for the weak or selfish.

Every day, in every kind of healthcare facility, you save countless lives day in and day out. This should be enough to be thankful for, but there is so much more you do.

Here are some of the reasons we Appreciate and Thank You…

1)       Terrific Listening Skills. With great communication skills, you listen to your patient’s questions, concerns, pain, complaints, etc. You always do your best to address these concerns, get answers, and show you care.

2)       Sense of Calmness. Panic isn't an option. You know how to remain calm in chaotic situations and provide the best care possible. You know time spent panicking is critical time wasted. This sense of calmness is felt by your patients and helps to keep them from panicking. What a wonderful gift!

3)       Empathy. You work with patients when they are worried about their health. Perhaps they just received a scary diagnosis, are facing surgery or painful medical treatment. The point is, you often see patients when they are at the lowest points in their lives and are most vulnerable. You empathize with them.

4)       Patience. Some patients, or their loved ones, lash out at those who are trying to help. It’s difficult not to take it personally, but you understand it is their stress, pain or grief that is responsible for their behavior. You understand and dig deep continuing to give care. Your patient attitude also comes in handy when fellow staff behave inappropriately under stressful circumstances.

5)       Super Smart. There’s no doubt about it. Nurses are very intelligent. You might be just starting or continuing your education. Or, you worked hard in school and passed the NCLEX. You’re always learning and discovering better ways to get things done. Your critical thinking skills and ability to think on your feet are truly impressive!

6)       Passion and Dedication. Many of you push through 12+ hour shifts on your feet, skipping bathroom and lunch breaks to make sure your patients are getting everything they need. You are dedicated to being the best Nurse possible.

7)       Best Teammates. People can sense and feel a hostile work environment. You do your best to support and help each other get through the toughest times. Being part of a team is essential in making things run smoothly in any healthcare setting. Having each other's backs makes a pleasant and productive work environment.

8)       Sense of Humor. This will get you through many difficult times, both inside and outside work. There’s nothing like a good joke to share!

In conclusion, thank you for all you do for your patients, students, and families. There would be no Healthcare without YOU!

Happy Thanksgiving!!
